Baras Ambarak, the City of Topaz, is a city located just north of the Mountains of Gorn. It is a mining town, known especially for its topaz production. The craftsmen of Ambarak make beautiful gems and jewlery out of the mined topaz.
Founded: 1234 EC
Inhabitants: ~12.000
Economy: stable
Production: Topaz, Sandstone
Baras Ambarak was founded by the Elves after an expedition discovered the rich topaz veins in the mountains. The city quickly grew to considerable size. A road was build connecting Baras Ambarak and Baras Korthag, allowing caravans to supply a steady stream of sandstone and topaz to the rest of the realm. While the miners were human slaves, many of the craftsmen were Elves, though over time more and more humans would learn the craft.
The city's growing wealth made paranoid Empress Raxana of the First Elvish Empire worried, fearing its governour, Lord Unelos Carsondir, would rise up against her. The attempt to assassinate him failed and so she sent out a small army to remove him by force. Unelos, being warned of the approaching force, rallied what forces he had on his side and made a stand against Raxana. The result was the Battle of Baras Ambarak in 1968 EC.
Unelos was slain and the town was largely destroyed, the survivors were captured and brutally executed in Baras Korthag. This increased the growing resentment among the Humans in the south and is considered one of the reasons for Banisûl's rebellion in 1977 EC.
Banisûl had the city rebuild in 2010 EC. Although it remained unharmed during the Great War, its economy tanked greatly, for there was no need for topaz.
The buildings of Baras Ambarak are made of sandstone, decorated with topaz.
